Baby Preps
I'm beginning to realize we won't be very prep'd for what our April newborn will need if TSHTF this summer. I'll talk to the wife and remember what it was like for our 1st kid (6yrold). Wife plans to BF for first year but if she can't then I guess homemade canned babyfood? I'm pretty sure stocking up on pampers is gonna be mucho dinero. Any advice? Thanks!

Just a wild thought ...as I am not a expert on child care.....would you consider stocking up on the old cloth diapers?? you know the ones that you use to wash and use again?? I would still stock on regular diapers...... but when the massive hyper inflations sets in it will blow the cost of diapers and formula skyhigh MANY PEOPLE are going to go back to cloth diapers and home made Baby food....(all of this one time use is gonna dry up pretty fast). That is all I can offer ...... hope that is of some use...... BTW congrats on the baby..... they will be the ones to change the future. T |
Re: Baby Preps
Oh yeah.......
Welcome to GIM......... you are among good friends T |
Re: Baby Preps
Cloth diapers, www.evolutiondiapers.com, you'll save $2000 over a birth to potty training supply of disposable diapers.
PS congratulations, I'm due to have a new one in April too. |

I wasnt involed in that hit piece. I was actually very surprised that folks started to spew venom over a non-issue. I tried to speak up on the ladies behalf. I do aplogize for the behavior of the others..... please excuse them... T |
Re: Baby Preps
T -- Yup, cloth's were what I was starting to think about but you can guess who's going to be the one to clean them since I can't BF.
Goddess -- Race ya! betya mines bigger than yours:D. Shir -- Yes, but I don't believe in guns or PM . hadit -- I learned from my ranch friends not to poke dead animals, especially the big bloated ones in the deadyard. We graduated to shooting them from a distance to watch the secondary xploshun or time the whistle. Thanks all |
Re: Baby Preps
I believe Lehman's sells a grinder for making your own baby food. I know it's a little bit early, but it might be a good thing to have on hand. Clothe diapers and diaper pins would also be good.

Re: Baby Preps
Am I supposed to be attacking someone right now? I guess I missed the meeting :sarc:
GWT, welcome to GIM and ignore the drama queens and kings if you can. --- Just a thought: Maybe consider using a diaper service, and then if things go wrong, you can just start washing on your own. Maybe stock up on canned baby foods (gerber, etc), Big Lots has some really good deals from what I've seen. |
Re: Baby Preps
It would be tough to teach the baby to handle the recoil, even from a .22 calibre weapon. Have you considered a small BB gun instead?

Re: Baby Preps
My $.02.
Hopefully, your old lady will be able to breastfeed your baby for a good long while. If you've got preps for her, your baby should be square for at least his or her first six, seven, months. (I think.) If your wife can't or won't or isn't interested in breastfeeding, Sams and Costco both have their generic brand formulas. Sam's brand (Member's Mark) is comparable to Enfimil, and Costco's Kirkland brand is basically the same as Similac. The Kirkland brand generic Similac we buy is MUCH cheaper than the real deal, and worth the Costco membership alone if you live near a Costco. The Gerber fruit and veggies I just bought expire around Jan '09 - March '09. The little jars of chicken and beef say Dec '09. The Gerber oatmeal we have is "best" by Dec. of '08. I bet it would keep a lot longer. A babyfood grinder would probably be a good idea. Babies can self-feed Cheerios by the time they're 8 months old or so. I don't know if you want to try and keep cereal in your preps. No cow's milk until they're over a year old, so make sure you have enough formula. I apologize for knowing too much about baby food/diets. |
Re: Baby Preps
i just found out that im gonna be a granny---my first granbaby, due early sept. and as exciting as it is, prepping has been on my mind big time. so i made a list (guess im kinda anal, i make a list for everything) is the following basics i want to have on hand:
6 dozen old fashioned cloth diapers pins plastic pants sized from newborn to 2T biodegradable diaper liners-boxes & boxes-i used them on my kids 100 yrs ago-very handy 1 dozen flannel receiving blankets 1 doz. terry jumpsuits 1 doz t shirts 1 doz socks in different sizes 4-5 bottles, bottle brushes winter fleece bunting for first winter baby sling to carry baby baby back pack to carry baby--cool, i used to have one baby food grinder shoes for 2 yrs and up---gonna be a bit tricky i think toddler overalls and t shits, long and short sleeves toddler winter clothes extra socks sweaters or fleece jackets in different sizes. hats i can make childrens gloves material and patterns to make childrens clothes different sizes jeans different sizes its been a long while since i had my kids, but this is what i remember using the most on them. im sure im missing things. but since the kids are just getting by and dont really have a clue how precarious the world is financially, im wanting to stock up for them for backup. |
